About Mystery & Detective
Mystery and detective fiction asks a question and makes the reader wait for the answer: who did it, how, and why. This shelf holds some of the books that shaped the form, including Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone, often called the first great English detective novel, and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, which made the consulting detective of Baker Street the most famous in the world.
Not every book here is a puzzle. Crime and Punishment follows a murderer instead of a detective, Jekyll and Hyde hides its secret in plain sight, The Phantom of the Opera follows a hidden voice through the Paris Opera, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow leaves its mystery unsolved. Each is retold as an illustrated picture book with narration, with the original text free to read alongside.
