About Gothic & Horror

Gothic fiction is the literature of dark houses, family secrets, storms, and the fear of what hides inside people as much as outside them. It began in eighteenth-century England and gave the world some of its most lasting monsters and mysteries, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to Bram Stoker's Dracula, the vampire count who travels from his Transylvanian castle to London, and Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera, whose masked figure haunts a Paris theatre.

Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray turns a portrait into the record of its subject's hidden life. The shelf also holds books that borrow the gothic's moods: Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, with its locked third floor at Thornfield Hall, and Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, set on the fog-bound moor. Each is an illustrated, narrated retelling, frightening in atmosphere rather than gore.
